Spring Cleaning for Tree Care: Look Out for Emerald Ash Borer
With winter weather almost behind us and new buds popping up on trees, now is the time to be proactive with your tree care. The trees in your yard may be especially in need of loving care after the winter storms we have experienced this year. Even if you are unable to see broken branches, if you have tall trees that overhang structures, having a professional perform an inspection is a good idea. You can also ask your tree care specialist to inspect for Emerald ash borer or the Spotted Lanternfly, two pests that have caused a great deal of damage to trees in the area.
Tree Care “Spring Cleaning”
Just like you do spring cleaning in your home, some tree maintenance should be done regularly for your trees to thrive.
Inspect your whole landscape
Start from your driveway and look at the landscape as a whole. You may see trees that are growing irregularly, thin areas in the canopy, fungal growths, or other issues that might get missed by a daily casual glance.
Clean up debris
Normal fall and winter seasons will cause leaves to cover the areas around the base of your trees. After the winter season we have just encountered, you may find larger branches that need to be removed. Rake or pick up any leaves, twigs or other debris around your trees.
Add Fresh Mulch
In addition to giving a fresh look to your landscape, mulch helps trees retain moisture and can restrict weed growth. Three inches is an optimal thickness, all around the tree but just shy of touching the tree. If mulch piles against the tree, fungus is more likely to develop.
Trim and Prune
Trimming and pruning is important. Spring and summer storms in our area can cause branches to fall, especially if they have been damaged already. Branch thinning can help with overall air flow and reduce the potential for damage in a storm. Pruning shrubs also encourages healthy growth.
Performing these outdoor tasks this spring will help ensure that your landscape looks great this summer and that your trees are healthy and free of disease, pests like emerald ash borer, or other damage.
